After 50 Years Working with Radiation, This Tiny Thermal Camera Surprised Me I've spent more than 50 years working with different forms of radiation. My career started as a Navy nuclear engineer, and over the years I've worked in health physics, detector development, and research involving thermal imaging and other sensing technologies. Because of that background, I'm probably more critical than most people when I evaluate a new piece of equipment. When Robofinity invited me to test Thermory, I was excited to see how today's compact thermal imaging technology has evolved. After spending time with the camera, I was genuinely impressed by both its portability and its capabilities. The first infrared camera I ever worked with was about the size of a shoebox. Today, that capability fits into something you can carry in your pocket. That's a pretty remarkable change. What impressed me even more was the software. One thing I particularly liked was that Thermory isn't limited to a mobile app. Being able to switch between Android and Windows gives you the flexibility to work the way you want. For quick inspections in the field, the Android app is convenient. When I wanted to review images in more detail or manage larger projects, the Windows software made that much easier. About Android app What surprised me was how much functionality the Android app includes. It's much more than a viewer for thermal images. It includes professional tools such as multiple color palettes, temperature alarms, inspection reports, picture-in-picture mode, image analysis, and Pro Mode. One thing I appreciated was that the software doesn't force users into a single workflow. It's user choice. What are you used to? What do you want to use? And how are you going to apply it? Personally, I've always preferred the Rainbow palette, while many military users may prefer grayscale because they're accustomed to infrared night vision. The important part is that the software lets you work the way you're comfortable working. My Favorite Feature My favorite part about it is the Pro Mode... that's literally my daily work. As someone who has spent decades studying radiation and thermal energy, I know that accurate thermal analysis isn't just about looking at colors. Humidity, emissivity, reflected temperature, distance, and ambient conditions all influence what you're actually measuring. Seeing these professional parameters available inside such a compact product was unexpected. The inspection workflow is surprisingly capable. You can place points, lines, boxes, or polygons on the image to analyze specific regions. I particularly liked the polygon tool in the windows software, as it allows you to isolate exactly the area you're interested in. The Inspection Report feature is also useful for organizing images, creating reports, and scheduling reminders for future inspections. This is very nice. For homeowners, that's convenient. For professionals performing repeat inspections, it's even more valuable. Windows software Experience Using the included cable, I connected it directly to my Windows PC. The Windows interface is different from Android, with a larger workspace and tools organized along the side. For long inspections or industrial work, I actually see this as an advantage. Recording lengthy thermal videos consumes a lot of storage. During one inspection, I recorded 45 minutes of footage, which used around 800 MB to 1 GB of storage. As I mentioned, that's the advantage of the PC. Testing a Home Heat Pump Water Heater For my evaluation, rather than simply looking for hot spots, I wanted to verify whether the system was operating correctly. Thermal imaging allows you to observe how temperatures change over time—watching the tank cool, the heat pump activate, the exhaust become colder, and the hot water line warm up exactly as expected. By understanding how the equipment should function, thermal imaging becomes an analytical tool instead of just a colorful picture. After completing the inspection, my conclusion was straightforward: The Thermory IR camera is an analytical tool that has great value. Final Thoughts Of course, no product is perfect. While testing, I also shared a few suggestions with the Robofinity team about features I'd like to see added in future software updates. That's part of evaluating any new tool, and I was glad they were open to feedback. Overall, I was pleasantly surprised by what this little camera can do. After decades of working with thermal imaging technology, I can honestly say Thermory delivers a lot of capability in a very small package. I was really amazed at this camera. I wholeheartedly recommend you see about getting one.
